Crafting Process | Handmade | Dimensions | Size Ranges

All BookBoxes™ are hand made from discarded books purchased from charities and recyclers. Each one is individually hand crafted at our studio on Vancouver Island, Canada.

Crafting Process
The crafting of BookBoxes™ involves a multiple step process, the details of which are a secret. What we can tell you is that the pages of the books are soaked in a vat of glue (starch or resin) to bind all the pages together into a solid block of paper mache. They are clamped and dried in a pressurized chamber to prevent warping. Once the pages have been hardened into a block, they are individually machined-out to create the cavity.

It sounds simple but the tricky part is speed and consistency. Working with discarded books means that every piece is essentially a one-of-a-kind effort. After twelve years of development ,we have learned how to work quickly in the complex and ever changing world of recycling.

Handmade
The BookBox™Company is a craft business. We do it all by hand. Every stage of every piece is hand crafted, by us. There is pride in every BookBox™ that leaves the studio.

Dimensions
Whenever possible the outside dimensions of Bookboxes are included in product descriptions. These dimensions are approximate.

Dimensions are in inches using the format; of Height x Width x Depth, as illustrated below.

Please note that the cavity inside a BookBox will be smaller than the external measures. Height and width are reduced by approximately 3/4 to 1 1/4 inch. Depth is reduced by approximately 3/8 to ½ inch.

Size Ranges
The descriptions below are meant as guidelines. Dimensions in each of the size categories are approximate. If you require a specific size of bookbox, please contact us to discuss your needs.

SMALL (S)
BookBoxes™ are the choice of travelers who want a place to hide their watch and passport in a hotel room or in luggage. They are made from thin or small novels and reference books. Thickness ranges from one half inch to one inch depending on the height of the books.
Small BookBoxes™ are deep enough to hold pens, floppy discs, cigars and small booklets (eg diaries) but are not particularly deep.
MEDIUM (M)
BookBoxes™ are the size of a typical hardcover novel or small text book.
They are ideal for holding keys, candy, photos, small cell phones, music tapes, and a variety of other moderately sized objects.
Thickness ranges from 1" to 1 ¾" depending on height.
(Our most popular size.)
LARGE (L)
BookBoxes™ are the size of the average college text book. They are either thicker or taller than medium Bookboxes™ and range in thickness from approximately 1 ½" to 2".
Some large bookboxes are made from a combination of thin books. We call these 'stacks'. The thin books used to make stacks are not thick enough on their own to create a useful box. As stacks they have the same volume as a large. (Stacks are only available in random title selections, such as family packs and antiques.)
Large Bookboxes™ are able to conceal liquor flasks, CD's, compact cameras and T.V. remote controls.
Extra Large (XL)
BookBoxes™ are typically the size of a college text book or a very thick novel.
Xlarge are the ideal size to serve as a coffee table center for holding T.V. remote controls and just about anything else.
